Cataract Procedures

In your parents’ or grandparents’ day, cataract surgery was considered risky, and required a long hospital stay. Today, cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and takes only a few minutes to be performed. Patients can then go home and rest in comfort and avoid the inconvenience and expense of staying in a hospital.

Your cataract will be removed with an advanced technique called phacoemulsification, or small incision cataract surgery. Using only a topical anesthetic, a 1/8 “ incision is made. The cataract is broken in small fragments and gently suctioned from the eye. Then an intraocular lens is implanted. No sutures are required. There is no pain in this surgery.

Many patients are able to see clearly soon after surgery and it is possible to return to daily activities almost immediately.

The time to have your cataract removed is when you believe the surgery can improve your quality of life.

By the way, once removed, cataracts will not grow back.
